Homeopathic Medicine for Acidity, Heartburn & Reflux

Antacids neutralise the acid. Homeopathy asks why it is being produced that way in the first place.

Acidity, heartburn and reflux describe stomach contents irritating a lining not built to handle them. It is one of the most common complaints in Indian general practice, and one of the most heavily self-medicated — antacids and proton pump inhibitors are bought over the counter for years at a stretch.

They work, and that is precisely the problem: suppressing acid indefinitely without asking why it is happening leaves the cause untouched, and long-term acid suppression has its own costs. Homeopathy approaches it from the other end, choosing the remedy on the pattern — burning that is better or worse for eating, bloating that comes on within minutes, sour or bitter regurgitation, whether cold drinks help, and what the person is like when under pressure.

Much of the result comes from the ordinary things, done consistently: the last meal earlier, smaller portions, less alcohol and tobacco, and the head of the bed raised. A remedy works considerably better alongside those than instead of them.

Common Symptoms

  • Burning behind the breastbone, often after eating or on lying down
  • Sour or bitter fluid rising into the throat or mouth
  • Bloating, belching and a feeling of fullness soon after starting a meal
  • Nausea, especially in the morning
  • A persistent dry cough, hoarseness or a lump-in-the-throat sensation
  • Pain that wakes you at night

Self-care & Lifestyle

  • Leave three hours between the last meal and lying down — the single most effective change for night-time reflux.
  • Raise the head of the bed by 15–20 cm. Extra pillows bend you at the waist and can make it worse.
  • Eat smaller and more often rather than one large late dinner.
  • Cut alcohol and stop smoking; both relax the valve that keeps acid down.
  • Identify your own triggers rather than a generic list — coffee, chilli, citrus, mint and fizzy drinks are common ones.

When to see a doctor

  • Difficulty swallowing, or food sticking — this always needs investigation
  • Unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or vomiting blood
  • Black, tarry stools, which suggest bleeding higher up
  • Chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, or pain into the jaw or arm — treat as cardiac until proven otherwise
  • Symptoms that have needed daily antacids for more than a few weeks
  • New reflux starting after the age of 50

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stop my antacids and switch?

Not abruptly, and not without the prescribing doctor. Proton pump inhibitors in particular cause rebound acid when stopped suddenly, which feels like the condition getting dramatically worse. Any reduction should be gradual and supervised.

Is heartburn ever serious?

It can be. Chest pain is the symptom people most often mistake for indigestion when it is cardiac, and difficulty swallowing or weight loss needs prompt investigation. Both are on the list above for a reason.

Will diet alone fix it?

For a good number of people, yes — timing, portion size and alcohol account for most of it. A remedy helps where symptoms persist despite doing those things properly.
